From Today’s New York Times: American Way of Birth Costliest in the World

As if the cost statistics weren’t outrageous enough, in 2011, 62 percent of women in the United States covered by private plans that were not obtained through an employer lacked maternity coverage.The Affordable Care Act will help change this. Starting next year insurance policies will be required to include maternity care, but exact coverage is still unknown. It is clear that childbirth is far too medicalized in our country.
